Pay Your Money and Take Your Chances

Quotes and Notes #250, July 11

“Having made the decision, do not revise it unless some new fact comes to your knowledge. Nothing is so exhausting as indecision, and nothing is so futile.”—Bertrand Russell, “The Conquest of Happiness”—

At times I ask, “Is that storm coming or going? Is it going to stay or pass on through? Should I hide from it or find glory in it?

I find it best to look at all sides and then, more than likely, go on and do whatever I was going to do anyway. Show up at the circus—pay your money and take your chances. Indecision gets you nowhere. To not move is a move in and of itself.

And don’t try to decide whom to share a smile with—share it with all.

Spontaneity and impetuousness reduce stress

Quotes and Notes #249, July 10

“A great way to get rid of stress is—every once in a while—do something totally different and unexpected without any prior planning.”—Franklin Gillette—

Spontaneity and impetuousness engender rejuvenation. If adult life becomes a bit difficult at times, try dealing with it by calling in a bit of childishness. Find something “shiny” or loud or pretty to occupy your mind for a while. Do something totally outside of your routine. Play.

You are Responsible for Your Own Attitude

Quotes and Notes #239, July 9—purpose

“A man said to the universe:
‘Sir, I exist!’
‘However,’ replied the universe,
‘The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.’”
—Stephen Crane, “War Is Kind and Other Poems”—

Here’s the news for today. The universe is not going to help you to be happy today. You will have to do that for yourself. The universe is not going to help you to reach your goals. You will have to do that for yourself.

You, and you alone, are responsible for developing your own attitude. Make it a good one.

Youth is a State of Mind

Quotes and Notes #238, July 8

“Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions. It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.”—Samuel Ullman—

Peter Pan told me I didn’t have to grow up unless I wanted to. I have listened. I have decided that I shall not dwell on the after-effects of Chemo. I will not allow the residuals of a carpal tunnel operation to cloud my thinking. I have chosen to enjoy not having to tend to an over-abundance of hair on my head.

I have decided to be who I am, to enjoy the memories and to look forward to the balance of my life, no matter what it may hold.

Try The Pause That Pleases…

Quotes and Notes #237, July 7

“Now and then it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.”—Guillaume Apollinaire—

Stop and look at the world before the start of the day.

Work the garden with dedication. Dream of its potential yield. Add fertilizer in just the right amounts, and wait for the harvest. While waiting for the harvest, be sure to pull an early tomato and stand there in the field enjoying it with the sweet juice dripping down your chin and onto your shirt. Take a break and enjoy.

Imagination Conquers Limitations

Quotes and Notes #236, July 6

“I like geography best, he said, because your mountains and rivers know the secret—Pay no attention to boundaries.”—Brian Andreas—

The ever-changing paintings of nature are there for our amazement and enjoyment. We can rise above the clouds or fall as water in the flood-fed river. Our minds can know no limitations.

No Time For Anger…

Quotes and Notes #235, July 5

“’Oh, Eeyore, you are wet!’ said Piglet, feeling him.
Eeyore shook himself, and asked somebody to explain to Piglet what happened when you had been inside a river for quite a long time.”—A.A. Milne—

If you fall in the river you will probably get wet.
If you get into contentious arguments with contentious people you will probably stand a chance of becoming angry. Anger just takes up too much time and energy to be worth the trouble, so it is best avoided.

Rather than becoming angry, we should muddle through anger-causing situations by using them as a learning tool and quietly exiting. This is much better for our mental health.

Laugh and Shower in the Rain…

Quotes and Notes #234, July 4

“We can speak without voice to the trees and the clouds and the waves of the sea. Without words they respond through the rustling of leaves and the moving of clouds and the murmuring of the sea.”—Paul Tillich—

Listen to the world as it talks to you. Look at nature as it shares a smile with you. Laugh in the sunshine and shower in the rain to clean your spirit. Enjoy!

Beauty is Where You Find It…

Quotes and Notes #233, July 3

“Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children’s faces looking up,
Holding wonder like a cup.”
—Sara Teasdale—

I love it when it doesn’t rain. Of course, I also love it when it does rain. One time I went to the beach for sun and fun. There was a majestic storm that lasted the entire week. I have forgotten other trips to the sea but I will never forget the hours I spent loving the rain, the wind, and the giant waves.

Scattered Along Life’s Pathway

Quotes and Notes #232, July 2

“The sun—the bright sun, that brings back, not light alone, but new life, and hope, and freshness to man—burst upon the crowded city in clear and radiant glory. Through costly-coloured glass and paper-mended window, through cathedral dome and rotten crevice, it shed its equal ray.”—Charles Dickens, “Oliver Twist—

That, my friends, is a beautiful piece of writing. The sun shines down equally for each of us. Joseph Addison gave us another insight way back in the early 18th century:

“What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.”—Joseph Addison
