“If You Can Remember Me…”

Quotes and Notes #195, May 23

“There is no death, daughter. People die only when we forget them,’ my mother explained shortly before she left me. ‘If you can remember me, I will be with you always.”—Isabel Allende, “Eva Luna”

And so we remember. We remember those who came back and those who didn’t. We remember those who endured the heat in the desert, mud in the rice paddies, and cold in Korea. We remember those who entered the Battle of the Bulge to stay, to come home on a train full of wounded, or to return with a memory. We remember those who were gassed in France, or hit by a minie ball in Gettysburg.

We remember those with rags on their feet in the middle of winter before crossing the Delaware.

And for now, remember with a smile

Transform It Into Remembrance

Quotes and Notes #194, May 22

“Grief starts to become indulgent, and it doesn’t serve anyone, and it’s painful. But if you transform it into remembrance, then you’re magnifying the person you lost and also giving something of that person to other people so they can experience something of that person.”—Patti Smith—

Memorial day arrives toward the end of May. This is a wonderful concept, that of remembrance and it sets aside a special day just to remind us to focus for a while on some of the wonderful people who are no longer with us.

There are those in my past whom I remember with a joy of having known them—those who had a profound effect in my life and development. I will visit them this weekend and then again, and again.

There are those of whom I have read or otherwise learned who worked to make the world a better place, who helped to form our wonderful country. Remembering them will allow us to somehow live a small part of their lives.
Memorial Day is good

And share a smile. It will make you memorable.
