One day, I found my friend Santos knee deep in a ditch looking for a water leak. He took a break and we talked for a while. I asked, “Santos, why is it that you have the hardest and dirtiest work but you are still happy, laughing, and joking continuously?”
He thought, took a sip of his coffee, and said, “See Juan, trabajo es trabajo, dinero es dinero (work is work, money is money). We must work to get dinero so we may as well be happy. The job doesn’t matter as long as you are happy. When you get home, there is food and love.”
When I was young, my mother would read me a short story titled, “Never Worked and Never Will.” It was about a wood carver and his friendship with a little girl who liked to watch him work. The wood carver loved his job. The people in the town said that the wood carver was crazy, that he worked harder than anyone around. The little girl understood.
Happiness and optimism work together. Optimism gets better with practice. Practice.
